Reflections

June 2011

During this month of June, we celebrate the feast of Pentecost – the presence of the Holy Spirit among us: the Holy Spirit…will teach you everything and remind you of all I have been saying… Jn 14:26

Christianity is not just a theory about what happened in history; it is about what takes place in human life through the action of the Spirit; it is about discerning the movement of the Spirit through what is happening around us and being attentive to the new spaces into which we are being led. We are being invited to speak a new language and communicate the gospel in ways/words that resonate with peoples’ current experiences. As we read the gospels, we notice that this is the example given us by Jesus.

What seems to be expected of us by the Church and the people around us may not be where the Spirit of God desires to lead us. We are being challenged, not just to fit in but to call forth.

Spirit of light, may the fire of your wisdom burn brightly within us

Spirit of fire, engulf us with God’s abiding love

Spirit of courage, dispel the fear that tends to linger in our hearts

Spirit of peace, help us be channels of your peace to those in need

Spirit of love, instil in us an openness to the needs of others

Spirit of power, support us as we face the challenges of life

Spirit of truth, guide us to walk the way of the gospel in daily life.

Spirit of joy, enthuse us to proclaim the Good News to a waiting world

Spirit of silence, in the still moment may we be open to your enlightening presence

In the silent chapel of our hearts, let us listen to the Spirit who continues to nudge us gently and guide our footsteps along life-giving paths.
