Reflections

April 2011

The Lord said to Abraham, leave your country, your family…for the land that I will show you” Gen 12:1-4.  In these turbulent times for both church and state, the challenge we face is to let go of the familiar and allow ourselves to be open to where the Spirit may be desiring to lead us.

Jesus led them up a high mountain where they could be alone” Mt 17:1.This speaks of movement – taking distance – becoming aware. When Peter wanted to erect a tent for Jesus, Moses and Elijah i.e. to structure them in one place, the response that came was: “listen…stand up…do not be afraid”. These texts carry a very real message for the kind of renewal needed today.

Many of us in our Church may be among the blind who need to “see again”. How do we hear the words: “go and wash in the Pool of Siloam – a name which means one who has been sent” Jn 9:7.

In these times, the invitation for us is less about following the footsteps of old and more about seeking what they sought; hence, the need to connect with people where they are and use a language with which they can identify. Jesus took part in people’s experience and used it to show what the kingdom of God is like. His response to their questions was: “the Holy Spirit will teach you everything”. Are we really giving space to the Spirit to teach us?

As members of the Church, could it be that we are continuing to re-arrange the chairs on the Titanic or are we seeking to offer insights and inspiration for a new relationship with God, with all people and with our planet?

Glory be to God, Creator and source of all life,

Glory be to God, Eternal Word made flesh who is for us the Way, the Truth and the Life, Glory be to God, Living Spirit who guides us on our way through life.
