Our Story

Advert

An advert placed in a local paper in Ireland:

The Infant Jesus Sisters seek to awaken each one’s creative giftedness and respond to the needs of the time.

Our story, which began 350 years ago, continues to find expression as we seek to live the Gospel in creative and courageous ways today…

In Ireland this takes the shape of: opening the scriptures with people, programmes with younger people during and after school hours, support for families and elderly, offering a listening ear, encouraging a sense of the mystery of creation, reaching out with IT…

Our main reference points are: (i) the core teachings of Jesus (ii) the spirit that has been part of our tradition, including: freedom with regard to structures, so that appropriate responses can be given to current needs; trust in God’s providential guidance; courage and daring  to explore new ways as needed; availability to go where needed; simplicity in way of life; attention to root causes; support for God-given feminine qualities; trust in the Spirit of God to lead us where we may not otherwise dare to go.

This was the spirit captured by our first Irish sisters who left for Asia many years before we had a base in Ireland.

Having been enriched by our experience with other cultures, we recognise the challenge to be open to the movement of the Spirit of God at this time in history, as we continue to explore the new questions arising and possible new forms of membership - either with us or alongside of us.
