Reading Some Mystics in the Context of Today’s Cosmology

Our understanding of ourselves, of history, of nature, especially of God, usually depends on our understanding of the world, on our cosmology.  When reading the Bible, for example, it helps greatly if we can enter into the mindset of the people who wrote it as well as the people to whom it was originally addressed. Discoveries in all branches of science over the past hundred years or so have given us an amazing insight into the age, evolution and wonders of the Cosmos in which our infinitely tiny Earth spins.

Again, this year a group of Infant Jesus Sisters + some lay friends met in Ballyferriter for an 8 day retreat during which we prayed to understand the life and teaching of some “nature” mystics in the context of this new cosmology.   It is wonderful to find that the awareness of  Francis of Assisi, Hildegard of Bingin, Etty Hillesum and others is confirmed by scientists in our time and in no way clashes with their discoveries.

Over the next few months we hope to share some of the content covered during our days of prayer together.
